Yesterday I was talking about the project The Secret Order of the Slice American photographer Chris Gampat . Today I propose you to discover his new project The Black Image , a magazine dedicated to the best of black and white photograph . This new magazine explores and documents the lifestyle monochrome, proposing to discover the work of talented photographers, but also interviews, tutorials and videos. The magazine The Black Image will be released through a dedicated iPad app and Android, allowing to provide a rich, interactive experience. This beautiful project is currently being funded on Kickstarter , and I also had the chance to interview Chris Gampat , professional photographer, editor and magazine creator The Black Image
– How did you start photography ?
Honestly, I arrived in photography hobbyist during high school. Do you remember it years ago, Motorola flip phones with a 2MP camera? That’s honestly how I started. My mother was totally against any kind of technology, so we therefore had an old film camera Olympus, but he always malfunctioned. But my phone camera was on me all the time, and I discovered that he had an exposure compensation and cool filters such as polarization, so I shot it with contenting me. At the time, everyone was making fun of what a phone can do.
– What is your favorite gear ?
Today I say to everyone that I shoot mostly in silver. For my personal work, it’s true. For commercial work, I usually turn to digital. Right now, my favorite setup is a Mamiya RB67 with a target of 120mm. Changes frequently between Ilford Delta 400 and Kodak Portra 400 for my film. But to be honest, I start not stand Portra. I’m also looking forward to buy CineStill film 120. Their stuff is pure magic.
– Which photographers have most inspired you ?
This is really a difficult question. I worked at Magnum, where so many people were very talented. Honestly, I like to think that I did it my own way. I used to read American Photo, NDS, Resource Magazine and others, and I was inspired by many photographers presented. But when it comes to my own business portraits and images, I’m quite the kind of guy who has found his own way, even if it’s curious enough for me to say.
– We talked about your project The Secret Order of the Slice , how did the idea ?
It came when I was hanging out with my friends in my apartment. We were watching Adventure Time really late at night and we decided to order a pizza. We were very hungry, so when the pizza finally arrived, we opened the box and one of my friends started to vocalize these angelic sounds you hear all the time in movies. So I thought, why not put a flash in there to express something like the light of God from the box? I left refine the idea for more than a year before taking a single photo.
– Where does this fascination for photography in black and white ?
My love of black and white has happened increasingly over the years, discovering that it was not only a crutch as many photographers think. On the contrary, sometimes the colors are just dull and you might as well get rid of it first. Also, I am now officially visually impaired, and see the forms and things like offer photography in black and white just makes sense.
– As a photographer, often personally working with black and white ?
Yes! All my digital cameras are finely tuned to one made like a black and white film. But besides that, I work with Ilford Delta 400, of Ilford XP2 and Kodak Tri-X. I also tried the Agfa APX 400 but I really do not have. Maybe I’ll give him another chance, sooner or later. I think the black and white really help a photographer to show someone where to focus in a picture, when properly used with good lighting and good composition.
– You launch The Black picture, what is your approach to select the photographers presented ?
Many people suggest that I run The Phoblographer , so they are already aware of the publication and how I want to make it grow. In addition, I look on the web and I work with curators in galleries, social media platforms and social networks for photographers. I also receive emails from other arts organizations. I also find tons of photographers discussing with people in various Facebook groups.
– In the future, do you extend the concept of The Black Image in books and exhibitions ?
If all goes well, we should do a show later this year. For books, I have not really thought about it, but a special annual printed edition would be something interesting. But mostly, I really want people to use their iPad, iPhone or Android, and we let them inspire and excite them about Photography. I think we need to start using the specific nomenclature “Photograph” and “photography”, where the first concern of art, not the avalanche of things people post on Instagram and Snapchat to show everyone their friends cool they are. This is a problem with the industry at the moment and we need to look at all this in a different way. The prototype of the magazine has some interviews and photos, the site has more content types that I want to show, and the final version is an interactive application that can do things that a standard PDF can not do .
– Why the name The Black Image ?
Well, it’ll be a magazine in English, and many English speakers do not speak French. So when you try to talk to people about your magazine, you have to think the easiest thing to spell, while effective. The Black Image is the best made possible expression for rapid spread.
